Hammertoes

Hammertoes

A hammertoe is a contracture of the lesser toe which is progressive in nature and is frequently seen with other foot deformities. This can include bunions, high or low arched feet. In rare instances, hammertoes can also develop after certain neurological events like a stroke. In earlier stages, hammertoes are flexible, but as the deformity progressive, it becomes more rigidand more difficult to treat conservatively. Surgery is recommended when pain is not all eviated by conservative treatment options, difficulty finding shoes that fit, painful corns and ulcers that develop on the toe.
